In *Kontinental '25*, director Radu Jude follows a bailiff from Cluj, Transylvania, who struggles with guilt following a tragic eviction. Through sharp satire and social critique, the film explores themes such as the housing shortage, personal responsibility, and the aftermath of post-socialism.

Romanian director Radu Jude (*Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World*) is the king of social-critical cinema, and with *Kontinental ‘25* he delivers another wonderfully rebellious satire about everything wrong with modern society. The film premiered at Berlinale, and we briefly feared it might skip Dutch independent cinemas entirely. Luckily, the programmers at Eye came to the rescue: thanks to their Previously Unreleased programme, the best 'orphan films' of last year are screened across the country. We’re showing this absurd gem early during the Cineville Preview Days.

Kontinental '25

After years of bad sequels, an enthusiastic young director (Hannah Einbinder) is asked to breathe new life into the Camp Miasma slasher franchise. But when she visits the star of the original film – now a reclusive actress shrouded in mystery (Gillian Anderson) – the two women end up in a bloody world of desire, fear, and madness.

When director Jane Schoenbrun made gender horror *I Saw the TV Glow* in 2024, it almost wasn’t shown in Dutch cinemas. But the Cineville theatres joined forces to bring it to the Netherlands exclusively anyway, through A24. Fortunately, we don't have to launch a rescue mission this time, because Schoenbrun is *so* back on the big screen, right where their work belongs. With *Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma –* which scooped the Queer Palm in Cannes this year – Schoenbrun makes a delightful sleepover classic about pop culture, being queer, and slashers.

***Sehnsucht in Sangerhausen* at the Cineville Preview Days**
This festival favourite from the Locarno Film Festival is another one that’s not to be missed during the Cineville Preview Days. In director Julian Radlmaier’s latest, the residents of Sangerhausen – a small town in Central Germany – are haunted by the ghosts of their history, from the early twentieth century to the present day. Radlmaier’s dialogue and visuals reminded us of early Wes Anderson and Aki Kaurismäki’s dry wit.

Sometimes a film makes you wonder how on earth it was ever made. *Hundreds of Beavers* is such a film, and it’s well on its way to becoming the number one cult film of the 2020s. Following a triumphant tour of international genre festivals – from America's Fantastic Fest to Yubari in Japan – this slapstick-style DIY film is finally set for a full Dutch release. Prepare yourself for a crazy trip with hundreds of even crazier bevers.

In *Below the Clouds*, filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi traverses the depths of Naples and its surroundings. A large part of the film takes place underground, where archaeologists uncover a Roman villa, firefighters investigate a system of clandestine tunnels, and museum curators manage a cellar full of stored treasures.

Winner of the Jury Prize at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, documentary filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi (*Sacro GRA*, *Fuocoammare*) brings us close to life at the foot of Mount Vesuvius with *Below the Clouds.* Where Alice Rohrwacher’s *La chimera* (2023) offered a poetic dream version of underground Italy, Rosi’s stylish black-and-white documentary dives into the daily reality of archaeologists, grave robbers, and residents in the Gulf of Naples – a region weighed down by a past buried in ash, where the *tombaroli* happily dig illegal tunnels. For this film, director Rosi dug his own poetic tunnels over the course of three years, straight through all layers of time. The result is a melancholic portrait of an existence built on the threat of magma and eruption. A must-see for the biggest screen – see it during the Cineville Preview Days.

Laura Samani’s second feature film had its world premiere at the recent Venice Film Festival, where it scooped the award for Best Actor. For Samani, this is a deeply personal project: she transplanted a classic novel by Trieste author Giani Stuparich to her own youth in 2007. The unique soundtrack is packed with nostalgic tracks from that era. In Samani’s coming-of-age tale, a Swedish girl moves to Italy and ends up in an all-boys school class. Surrounded by testosterone, she navigates her way past new friends, enemies, and smouldering first loves.
