Buddy

A colourful 1990s children's show turns into a complete horror show. A pink rabbit, a talking backpack and postbox and, of course, a big orange unicorn named Buddy: all characters in an educational 90s television show teaching young children to sing songs and be kind. But woe betide anyone who doesn't do what Buddy asks of them…

Director and screenwriter Casper Kelly is the mastermind behind the viral Adult Swim video Too Many Cooks, based on another pillar of 1990s television history: the sitcom. With Buddy, he dives into – or rather, behind – the deceptively colourful aesthetic of children's television, featuring a prominent role for the always wonderful Cristin Milioti (The Penguin). The titular unicorn (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key!) is part father figure, part narcissist – and clearly a murderous copy of the ultra-wholesome American children's hero Barney the Dinosaur. Buddy also nods to classics like Thomas the Tank Engine and Sesame Street, and is packed with old-school puppetry. A funny, bitter aftertaste to your warm childhood memories.
