Genre mashup and mind-bender featuring Jake Gyllenhaal's breakthrough role as the melancholic Donnie. 28 days, 5 hours, 12 minutes and 42 seconds left, and then the world ends.

Maryland, United States, 1988. Troubled teenager Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) is plagued by the ominous appearance of a man-sized rabbit. The beast predicts the end of the world for him in precisely 28 days, 5 hours, 12 minutes and 42 seconds.

In a sequence of bizarre events, including an aeroplane engine crashing onto Donnie's house, fate seems inevitable. Donnie is no longer the same after the prophecy. Everything appears to point to a strange disruption in time. How does he save himself, his friends and his family?

Director Richard Kelly was just 26 years old and hadn't even graduated from film school when he made his debut; yet he managed to cast big names like Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze. The director carved out a prominent role for the gloomy eighties music of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Church and Joy Division.
